How Do Arts and Crafts Help During the COVID-19 Crisis?

The world has changed so much since the coronavirus pandemic came to hit us without a warning. Now, we are forced to stay home and only go out to buy our needs just so we can protect ourselves from this deadly virus and a lot of us are still trying to adjust to this “new normal.”

But in those days when we feel confined, bored, anxious, and frightened, we can always turn to arts and crafts to help us through the crisis. Here’s why:

Art helps relieve stress

When you paint, do crafts, play music or just immerse yourself in an art project, you’ll easily get lost in your thoughts and forget about the stresses that you’re facing even just for a few hours.

In fact, studies have shown that spending at least 45 minutes on an art project can help you relive stress, improve your memory and boost your critical thinking skills.

Art is a way of setting yourself free

Yes, you are confined in your home because it’s the right thing to do. Many of us mourn our freedom and the life that we know will never come back again.

But art is a way of expressing yourself freely and without any limits. In a time when you can only do so much in terms of movement, you have art as an avenue where you can be as creative as you want.

Arts and crafts allow you to be mobile

You’re probably guilty of spending more time lying in bed or on your couch for most of the day. While there’s nothing wrong with getting adequate rest, you should also need to be a bit more active to stay healthy.

Now if you’re not one to work out or play sports, you can do some arts and crafts projects to keep you mobile.

Art can inspire others

We all need each other at this point in time. Since we’re all put in the same situation, we can rely on each other for inspiration so we can all thrive during this pandemic.

Doing a simple painting or putting together a scrapbook can already inspire someone to keep going while it also benefits you physically and emotionally.

Arts and crafts are a great way to bond with family

You now have the time to spend with family because you’re all in the same space. So, why not make use of it by doing arts and crafts together? Children love doing art projects because it keeps them busy and it also benefits them mentally and emotionally.

You can organise projects for the entire family to complete like a mural wall in one of your rooms where everyone can contribute so you have something to remind you of your bonding time while on quarantine in your home.

The takeaway

We are all struggling in one way or the other due to this pandemic. But we should also remember that we are resilient human beings and that we can all come out of this better. For now, let’s focus on the good side of this situation and express ourselves through arts and crafts.

Christmas Stocking Stuffer Ideas

Christmas isn’t just about what goes under the tree, you know – you have to remember to fill those all-important stockings as well. To help you decide what to put in them, we’ve come up with a couple of ideas to get you started, from cat ornaments to the more traditional oranges.

A lump of coal

Your kids might not be particularly pleased if they open their stockings up to find a bit of coal (we’d advise wrapping it up in some paper so it doesn’t get everything all sooty), but this used to be something of a tradition in Victorian times and was supposed to bring the recipient luck.

Cat figurines

Small items are perfect for stockings (especially if you plan to hang them from the mantelpiece as you don’t want them to be too heavy), so cat-like ornaments and figurines would be perfect to wrap up and include. You can find some lovely ones out there, whether you’d like one made from glass, wood or other material – just have a look around.

An orange

These days, there’s nothing that special about an orange but rewind time a little and these were once a huge delicacy because they were so hard to come by. They’ve been included in the toes of stockings for generations, a tradition that apparently began when St Nicholas would hand out gold coins to people.

Not every family has Christmas stockings but it’s such a lovely tradition that it seems a bit of a shame not to do it. What fun to have the whole family sat around the kitchen table on Christmas morning all opening their stockings at the same time!

Be Unique With a Handmade Gift

Shopping for that perfect present can be very tricky and particularly time consuming but there’s really nothing better than finding the right thing and watching someone unwrap it just to see that look of amazement on their face – and the best way to secure present success is to buy handmade gifts.
sale_21
There is so much amazing talent out there that you know you’ll always find the perfect present for that special someone in your life, whether you’re on the lookout for handmade bags, jewellery, home decor items or some lovely embroidery.

It can also be a bit difficult to shop for men upon occasion but finding something handmade will automatically show your recipient how much time you’ve spent hunting down the perfect present for them.

After all, who wouldn’t want something that no one else has and that really is the beauty about shopping for handcrafted items from artisan designer-makers – you know that everything is one of a kind and truly special, just like the person you are giving the present to.

Giving presents can be just as much fun as receiving them (some might even say it’s more fun!), particularly if you find that perfect gift that as soon as you see it makes you think of a certain person. So why not have a look around to see what amazing handmade items you can find? If you do, you know you’ll gain a reputation as being a really good present-giver – and people will really look forward to Christmases and birthdays!

Christmas Shopping

Online Christmas Shopping Is Where It’s At, Apparently!

It seems as though many of you are keen to avoid the hordes of Christmas shoppers out in their droves this year and will be choosing to buy Christmas gifts online instead.

Apparently,  two-thirds of you are intending to buy at least half of all your gifts on the internet this year, with just four per cent saying that they have no intention of buying anything online when it comes to Christmas shopping.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, those who live in rural communities are the ones most likely to head to the web to shop, with 91 per cent logging on regularly in order to shop till they drop.

What you do need to be aware of when buying online is your rights, however – earlier in 2015, new distance selling rules were brought in so as to protect people from any hidden costs and late delivery charges. The national charity found that three out of four people aren’t aware that they can cancel an online order or return their purchases within 14 days to get a full refund.

“Planning ahead now will make sure that your Christmas delivers. Late deliveries, faulty presents and unmanageable costs risk putting a dampener on the festive season. Make sure that you know your rights and have your budget in order before you part with your hard-earned cash,” Gillian Guy, chief executive with Citizens Advice, remarked.

Shopping online can be super convenient, particularly at this time of year when heading out to the shops along with thousands of other people can seem quite daunting, but just be careful and make sure you’re choosing to spend with a reputable company.

As it’s Black Friday tomorrow, please have a look at great selection of unique handmade gifts in Your Crafts Fair store.

What’s So Great about Giving Wooden Calendars? Apparently, a Lot

The best gift has very little to do with the price tag, and more about the thought that went into its selection. This is why generic gifts tend to disappoint recipients. But you have to admit that gift shopping is rocket science. At least this is what some people think. Well, what if you can find an item that seems generic, but not?

The best example? Wooden calendars.

Now do you see why it’s generic but not?

Calendars have now become freebies, especially during Christmas and New Year. This is why its popularity as a present is zilch. They’re not exactly something you’d wrap and put a bow on it.

But the Balinese wood calendars we offer are a category on their own. They tell you the day of the month, but in a more creative and attractive way. Cute cats, dogs and turtles carved out of a piece of wood, and set on top of the wooden calendar make for a great table-top accessory. So it’s not only functional, but beautiful as well.

Why give a Balinese wooden calendar

Not just the thought that counts

With our Balinese wooden calendars, there’s more than a thought that went into their creation. Wood carving, after all, is an artisanal process that involves the use of a cutting tool and expert carving skills. The detail on the topper is proof of the level of care and craftsmanship that went into every piece. So even if you bought it online, the workmanship involved more than makes up for the ease of purchase.

Perpetual calendars

Unlike printed calendars, the days and months of the wooden calendar are not tied to a particular year. This means you can use and re-use it for as long as possible. No need to buy a new one at every turn of the year, although no one can stop you from starting a collection of these beautiful and functional perpetual calendars.

Versatile pieces

The wooden calendars serve more than one purpose. It not only works as a decorative calendar, but also as a paperweight and a display feature. They won’t get blown away, but help keep paper on the table when the wind blows. Their decorative design and intricate details also make them worthy of a spot on your desk or display case.

So this Christmas season, give the gift of a “new day” every day with our Balinese wooden calendars. Decorative pieces that cost less, but priceless in purpose.

Calendars serve as a reminder of the cycles of life – birthdays, holidays, special occasions, etc. Might as well remember it with flair, right?

Gift Options: Photo Frames are out, Tapestries for Framing are in

These days, giving a photo frame for any occasion can be considered a crime. One might not say it outright, but photo frames as gifts are too old school. They no longer evoke that jovial feeling as they did in the past. Framed tapestries, however, will have the opposite effect.

One of the elements that make a gift special is its unique quality. Regardless if it’s for a birthday, anniversary, or Christmas, something different never fails to bring out the ohs and ahs. So instead of a generic photo frame or picture frame, buy tapestries for framing instead.

We have great options that you can choose from, in a size that is neither too small nor too big. It’s big enough to be placed on a wall, on a display case, and on a shelf. Where there’s enough room, you can redefine the term ‘personalisation’ by adding framed tapestry instead of just more photos or pictures.

Today we showcase the handmade Wall Tapestries for Framing by Belarusian artist Sergei Saltykov.

Wall tapestries for framing from artist Sergei Saltykov

These original small tapestries for framing are designed and 100% handmade by Belarusian artisan Sergey Saltykov. They are made with author’s own and mixed techniques of weaving. The framed wall tapestries are excellent for room décor which create comfort and warmth to your home or office even better than framed pictures thanks to their fabric texture.

These are the description of some of our tapestries made by the author.

Pear Tapestry

Measuring 20 x 20 cm, this beautiful representation of a pear is a testament to Saltykov craftsmanship. Carefully done by hand, you are assured of the amount of work that went into its creation. It doesn’t hurt that the colour palette is pretty impressive. It’s also an eye-opener, of a sort. Who would have thought to mix bright and vibrant shades with black and grey? Well, someone did, and the effect is pretty amazing.

Tulips Tapestry

To describe this handmade wonder as beautiful is an understatement. Viewed from afar, this 20 x 20 cm tapestry looks like a painting, complete with shadows and light. No one would think otherwise, until close inspection is done. Truly a masterpiece.

Autumn Tapestry

What usually comes to mind when you think of autumn? Yes, multi-coloured leaves everywhere. But talented artist Saltykov obviously had a different idea, and a unique view of the fall season. Why not give the gift of visual beauty this Christmas with this wonderful piece?

3 Tulips Tapestry

If there’s one thing you can expect from Saltykov’s tapestries, bright colours will be it. This particular handmade tapestry is sure to brighten any space. Place it next to a black and white photograph, and it will add a pop of colour instantly. Looking at it long enough is likely to calm your mind and give you a visual treat.

Some more of his beautiful tapestries which we can offer to your attention are the Blue Cat, Yellow Cat and White & Yellow Flowers.

Armed with that knowledge, buying tapestries designed and made by Sergei Saltykov as a gift will give a recipient a unique experience and more reasons to appreciate your choice.

What a Handbag Can Mean to a Woman

To a woman, a handbag is not just a bag for carrying things. Different women may have different opinions about handbags. Their personal preferences can also run from simple to something as unique as a handcrafted piece, complete with shells and woven pattern as decorative features, but no woman is without a handbag. And that’s a fact.

Men may not understand it. Some people may want to find a scientific explanation behind it. But it could be just a matter of practical use and fashionable options.

What a handbag may represent to a woman?

Status symbol
Handbag is to women what a car is to men. It is one way that some of them advertise the kind of life or career they are experiencing. If you can afford it, why not flaunt it? Women today are said to be more sensible with their finances than they were before, but a handbag is still number one on their shopping list.

To be one with a particular crowd
A designer bag tends to make a woman feel like she belongs to a particular crowd. It also signals to other people as to which group they belong to. So don’t be surprised if there is a proper way of carrying a designer bag, which is hooked over the wrist and palm held upwards.

As a form of “compensation”
It has been said that the bigger the bag, the bigger the void in a woman’s life that needs to be filled. But it is also possible that they buy a huge handbag, because they have plenty of stuff to bring. And nothing feels just as good, knowing that what you need is close at hand. Buying a bag may be a compensatory purchase, but if it can help you relieve stress without going broke, then there’s really no problem with it.

Regardless of what a handbag means to you, it is undeniably a necessity. Why do you think handbags come in many shapes and sizes? Because the aim is to address a woman’s varying needs, and serves as a statement piece as well.

What better way to make a statement than to buy handcrafted bags? There’s something fascinating about arts and crafts woven and sewn into something functional. There are benefits to handcrafted women’s bags as well.

  • Use of quality materials. You can bet on this.
  • Excellent workmanship down to the tiniest detail. This, right here, screams passion and dedication to deliver exceptional products.
  • Gives a sense of uniqueness. Your choice of handcrafted bag could be a rare find. Not to mention, exotic to a degree.

So go ahead, splurge. Reward yourself with a handbag or two.

If you want to combine arts and craft with your choice of bag, go for handcrafted products that are not only utilitarian, but also artistic and unique.

Jewellery And Gems

When it comes to jewellery in 2016, colour is the King! You can find your own stylish ear candy here, both bright and beady or, if big and bold isn’t your thing, then there are plenty of free-spirited earrings to be found!

Feel free to take a peek at metal patterned butterfly earrings, each set designed and handmade by a gifted artist.

2016 Runways are even seeing an ingenious joining of silk scarves and jewellery, making a single, drool-worthy piece. Try your hand at it with any of the lovely scarves — or even those you have already in your own closet!

Gems are more than simply birthstones or beauty-enhancers; in fact, they each have a long history as charms, messages, and therapies fraught with deeper meanings. For example, hematite’s name is derived from the Greek word for blood. Hematite is coal black or grey and shiny on the outside with a cooling smoothness on the skin. It has been used as a protective charm throughout history, and according to Feng Shui it is a grounding stone that calms and clears the mind.

Surprisingly, if you were to break this weighty black stone open, you would find that it is blood red on the inside. What a beautiful secret!

Another gemstone, chrysoprase, has a minty apple-green colour that can resemble jade. Ancient Greeks believed that this gem could secure a happy marriage and good health. Frederick the Great prized this gem above all others, having many of his household items and gifts crafted out of it. Alexander the Great always wore a chrysoprase on his belt, and it has been said that his success in battle was due to that one little stone. Its warm, clear light and vibrant colour make it an excellent choice to wear as jewellery or to design with.

Pearls are not formed inside the earth, but rather are grown, delicately and over years, in the ocean. They were incredibly rare and difficult to find until the 1900s, when a way was discovered to cultivate them ourselves. Many ancient cultures had rules about who could wear pearls and who couldn’t due to their rarity and value. The Greeks had a legend that pearls were the tears of the Gods; in fact, many cultures since have associated them with mourning and the mute expression of sorrow. Another meaning to be found in pearls is that of purity and union. Pearls are often associated with true love, weddings, and perfection. They have a beautiful, reserved sort of lustre to them that is like nothing else. Did you know that there are many colours of pearl? They can be black, gold, pink, brown, white, and also sometimes in unusual natural shapes.

These are only a few of the myriad of gemstone colours available for you to express your unique style to the world. Wearing jewellery is all about expression, shape, and meaning.

Have a look at the expertly crafted jewellery here at Your Crafts Fair for more inspiration — and maybe your perfect match!

Why Go Arts & Crafts For Mothers Day?

With Mothers Day around the corner you are probably already wondering what to get your mother for Mothers Day this year. Last year it was a bunch of flowers, the year before a pot plant, maybe some jumpers or smellies… but Christmas was just a few months ago, she still has the delicious smelling products you got her, she doesn’t need a new jumper and a bunch of flowers or a pot plant just aren’t going to cut it… so why not go handmade?

One of the great things about going handmade is that what you choose for your mum on Mother’s Day will be unique and it will have been made with love and chosen with thought. It wasn’t something you saw on the shelf when you did your weekly shop at the supermarket, it was something you went out of your way to select for her.

Because handmade products are unique it means your mum won’t have received it from your siblings because it is not a Mother’ Day gift that can be found anywhere. A handmade Mother’ Day gift is something that has been made by people that enjoy creating gorgeous arts and crafts and they love making something beautiful that can be given as a gift to a loved one. It’s not been made in a factory by someone that doesn’t care; a handmade Mother’s Day gift has been made with love, attention to detail and more care than you can imagine.

Here at Your Craft Fair we have bought together people that love what they do and are skilled at making incredible arts and crafts items.

If you are wondering what to get your mum to show her how much she means to you, why not consider choosing a unique, handmade Mother’s Day gift that she will really love. When you give a handmade gift for Mother’s Day you are showing your mum that you have taken the time to purchase something you know she will love, that is personal to her.

Black Cat Myths Laid To Rest!

According to the RSPCA, over 70 per cent of the cats in their care are black or black and white, not because they are unlucky but because black is actually the most common colour for a moggie – so if you’re thinking of adopting one this year, don’t be put off by their beautiful sable fur!

If you’re on the lookout for gifts for cat lovers for your friends and family, you might want to let them know that all the myths surrounding black cats – many of which can be traced back as far as medieval times – are in the main just massive old wives’ tales.

order-1

In fact, there is even a phenomenon known as Black Cat Syndrome (which also applies to dogs), so called because these animals are typically the last ones to be adopted and given a new forever home. Many people working in animal shelters believe that this is possibly down to the fact that it’s more difficult for people to read the facial expressions of black cats, coupled with the fact that there are all sorts of superstitions surrounding these gorgeous animals.

However, there’s a level of confusion about these superstitions. Some people think it’s lucky to have a black cat cross your path, other people think it’s the devil’s curse. Either way, black cats have earned a bad reputation for themselves over the years through no fault of their own – so why not try and get them back into people’s good books by shopping for black cat-related Christmas presents and handing them out to all your loved ones this year?

Top Tips For Cutting The Cost Of Christmas

From buying gifts to stocking up the fridge and decorating the house with beautiful decorations, there’s no denying that Christmas can be a very expensive time. Luckily, to help you keep the costs down Gocompare.com has revealed some of the nation’s best money-saving tips.

Using loyalty points, discount codes and vouchers emerged as the best way to save a few extra pennies, while setting out a budget and sticking to it was also deemed a great idea. Shopping in the sales can help you as well, as can avoiding any expensive festive experiences.

Last-minute shopping was frowned upon as this can be more expensive, while agreeing on a price limit for friends and family was also found to be a good way of saving. Using money-off apps can help spread the cost, while shopping at a cheaper supermarket can make a bit of a difference as well.

Other ideas that emerged included swapping the turkey for chicken or another type of meat, reusing Christmas wrapping paper and cutting down the number of people on your Christmas card list.

“For many people, Christmas puts added strain on already stretched finances – but as our survey shows, some forward planning, sensible budgeting and a little Christmas creativity can help you shave the cost of your festive spending,” customer insight manager with Gocompare.com Claire Peate remarked.

Do you have any good ways of cutting the costs at Christmas? We’d love to hear your ideas so let us know in the comments below.

£17bn To Be Spent This Christmas, Survey Says!

How much are you planning to spend on Christmas gifts this year? If one survey is to be believed, you’re likely to blow hundreds of pounds on your family and friends, with the average spend per person reaching £383.

order-1

According to MoneySuperMarket, people aged between 18 and 34 are likely to spend £397, while those aged over 55 will splurge £339. Those between 35 and 54 will spend the most, it was found, splashing out £418 over the festive period.

Head of banking with the comparison website Kevin Mounfort reminded people to manage their finances well in the run up to December 25th since there’s only one pay check left for many people before the big day.

“For most households, Christmas is often the time of the year when we are the most generous with our cash whether it is buying gifts for friends and relatives, or funding the traditional Christmas meal with all the trimmings,” he remarked.

No matter what way you swing it, £318 is a lot of money so you need to know that you’re buying the best products that are well suited to your friends and family – and there’s nothing like a beautiful handmade present to really show them how much you love and appreciate them.

You’ll find all sorts of wonderful goodies on our website that would go brilliantly under the tree. There’s nothing like watching someone open a present and seeing their faces light up in a wonderful smile, so put your pennies to good use this year and have a look to see what you can find in our online shop.

Christmas Gift Ideas: Wall Tapestries And Embroidery for Framing

As we approach the end of the year and the Festive period, there comes a time when we need to actually start buying presents, not just noticing them! Of course, depending on who you are buying for, the type of presents that you go for can change totally.

I mean, you wouldn’t buy a kid an old piece of art, and you wouldn’t buy your grandfather an Xbox 360, would you? Finding the right Christmas gifts is always very important. Especially in these financially difficult times, it’s hard to find gifts that aren’t just waste of money.

Art has, of course, always been a popular choice when buying for adults. People with their own homes are always looking for something a little bit different for their art collection, and tapestries are perfect for just that. As we all move away from the era of filling our walls with movie and music posters, and towards more traditional art methods, tapestries for framing are the perfect solution. It’s really easy to find a truly sublime piece of art which you will struggle to find elsewhere when browsing through wall tapestries.

In terms of finding really unique, powerful art the best place to look is in Eastern Europe. In the last couple of centuries, Eastern Europe has served as a breeding ground for talented artists and they have in turn produced many outstanding tapestries for framing.
Tapestries are a textile art, which are usually woven with two interlaced threads running parallel to the length and width of the tapestry. Usually depicting extremely emotional or colourful images, tapestries make a real impact on any home they are placed within. The reason they look so good is that they are not just printed out – they are genuinely woven. If you own a tapestry, there is a high chance it has been made completely unique and from total scratch. The threads tend to be made up of linen or cotton, with silk, gold or silver in the picture to add another level of class.

Some of the greatest parts of nature and history have been captured in wall tapestries. For example, this picture of four deer in a forest just sums up the perfection that is nature. Before we brought down the land with our industry, the world looked just like this picture depicts. It’s truly a stunning piece of artistry and would look perfect framed in a sitting room.

Tapestries offer a different style and perspective to your usual painting styles, and have commonly been one of the most enjoyable pieces of art you can pick up today. When it comes to finding the right type of art, it’s important to get the real deal and not the quickest alternative. Tapestries are very much the real deal, so why not consider picking some up for the Festive period to really complete the look of your home? They last for many years and offer a significantly higher level of depth and quality than your average paintings!

Gemstones – unique and artistic choice

We pride ourselves on not only the time and care we put into choosing products, but the quality of the material used.  All of our handcrafted goods are expertly and individually made, offering you a unique and artistic choice when it comes to jewellery.

However, do you know what the gemstones actually mean? Gemstones hold a rich culture that really does go back quite some time. We want to look into the types of gemstones that we sell, and what they mean – and even how they are related to your Zodiac sign!

This should either help you choose the gemstone you like, or at least let you know the story behind them.

Hematite – Coming in a variety of different colours, from black to silver and red, it comes with a rust-red streak through it. Harder than iron, it is found most commonly around hot springs. Used to improve relationships, it carries the energy of love and protection.

Tiger’s Eye – A unique and eloquent golden brown colour, Tiger’s Eye represents the ancient, and is linked to Pisces, Gemini and Capricorn. Known to emit luck, protection and healing, November lays claim to it being the birthstone of that month. It’s unique patterns and colours make it a very intricate and beautiful gemstone.

Pearl – The oldest of all the known gems, it comes from oysters and mollusks. It is so historic that February, April, June, July and November all lay claim to it being the birthstone of that month. The astral stone for Gemini and Cancer, it holds strong links to the moon hence its colour.

Jasper – Standing for energy and nourishment, it comes in either green, blue, purple, yellow or red. Jaspers are more commonly known as bloodstones. Jasper provides a warmth and is thought to give out positive vibes. Many people keep a jasper bowl at home for good luck.

Chrysoprase – Told to be from Venus, Mercury, or the Moon, it offers protection and healing and usually comes in a very attractive green colour. Usually aligned with May or December as a birthstone, Chrysoprase was carried many years ago to help clarify issues and provide protection on the seas.

Obsidian– Despite its petrifying look, Obsidian stands for healthy and divinity. Usually just black, it has a glass effect to it and is formed from cooled lava after a volcano eruption. Comes in a variety of different other colours, most commonly with hints of gold or silver.

Serpentine – Thought to be from Saturn, it is the birthstone of January, and offers protection and healing. When worn, it is thought to balance mood swing and helps solve conflict. A known meditation stone, it helps create inner peace. Also known as New Jade, it can come in a variety of different colours red, green, browns and white.

Onyx – Known to help remove negative vibes and help end an unhappy relationship, onyx is the birthstone of July and gives off protective vibes. Thought to hail from Saturn, it is one of the most beautiful gemstones to look at. Usually a piercing black, the depth can be mesmerising to some.

One of the most astounding aspects of the world around us is the way that we embrace so many unique cultures and traditions across the world. In Korea, a huge tradition is that of engraving – especially wood. Traditional Korean craftsmen were known as the “gakajang” and were a renowned collection of artisans who engraved letters and pictures onto wooden plates.

One of the few remaining gakajang today, Kim Gak-Han, has worked with a variety of different wooden items throughout his life – from cabinet and shelving to ancient texts. Having carried on the traditions of those who came before him, Kim’s work was recently included in a series of Confucian printing woodblocks.

These were recommended by the Korean government to be included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

The Confucian technique itself follows a rigid structure – using a carving knife at a 45-degree angle, the message is then created by a Joseon craftsman. It’s known as the “basic” angle throughout Korean architecture and art. This angle is commonly found on both a hanbok’s sleeves and a hanok’s eaves. This is a traditional Korean garment, as well as a traditional Korean building.

While in Japan they hold their knives at a 90-degree angle, in Korean culture art is crafted at the 45-degree range instead. The change in angle makes the Korean art more effective at creating lines with their sculptures, even allowing for circle carvings which are far more difficult to do in Japanese art. The actual differences between Korean, Asian and Japanese calligraphy can be quite nuanced to Western audiences, but to those from these respective countries the differences are fairly stark.

At the height of their artistic prominence, the Confucian Carvings were extremely expensive to make. They were typically used to create long-term homes for wisdom and scholarly writings, as well as poetry. Due to the expertise required to do the job properly, the expense of a Confucian carving at their height would have been roughly the equivalent of that of a male servant!

Today, though, the art has returned to its Buddhist roots. The remaining gakajang either work with the Buddhist temples to make scriptures, or teach sculpting classes whilst making ornaments on the side.

Kim himself struggled for many years due to the lack of expense in the industry, and early in his life he worked as a joiner’s assistant before touring to an Oh Ok-Jin tournament. Ok-Jin was a renowned sculpture and held regular exhibitions. Kim chanced upon the event as he was in the capital of Seoul getting treatment for breaking both of his ankles.

His limited mobility made him think about what he might do if he would never walk again, and the idea of sculpting immediately appealed. He came across the famous Suseonjeondo, a drawing of Seoul by the famous cartographer Kim Jeong-Ho in the mid-1840s. It was to be this stunning piece that changed his entire perspective on art, and he then became a student of Ok-Jin. His experience as a joiner now paid off, as he caught up with his classmates quickly.

He has since gone on to learn more about the subject through studying a Tripitaka Koreana. This 800-year-old set of Buddhist scriptures is engraved across more than 80,000 different woodblocks. Additionally, his studies have taken in Joseon woodblocks that were used to print the writings of Yi Hwang, one of the most prominent Confucian scholars of the entire Josean era.

As one of the last true artisans of his kind, Kim spends time lecturing at universities about traditional calligraphy and engraving, visiting various parts of the nation to help keep one of the proudest Korean traditions alive. Some of his key works include replicas of the Confucian and Buddhist woodblocks, including the Jijki, for restoration and research purposes. His craft may be one that less people know about than a few years ago, but it’s certainly something that Kim helps to keep alive and well through his various teaching sessions!

Still in search for a successor in the long-term, Kim believes that his teaching time is because of this search. He wants to find someone with a deep interest in calligraphy, the same interest that drew him to the subject in the first place. Because of the lack of earning potential in a career in this kind of lifestyle, many young people are put off by the prospect of taking on calligraphy as a long-term vocation, rather than just a nice hobby that they enjoy.

It’s something that perhaps we should lament, that there could be a loss of generation’s worth of teachings to society. These are some of the most important aspects of Korean history and culture, and to lose them due to a lack of financial gain would be a massive & complete irony.

In something of a coup, artworks of Sheila Hicks will be the first ever to be housed in Dan Graham’s Waterloo Sunset Pavilion, a steel and glass space, built in 2002, that sits atop the gallery overlooking Waterloo Bridge. The Paris-based artist will fill the space with her textile forms, described by curator Dominik Czechowski as ‘bundles of full colour’.

Foray into Chromatic Zones will invite interaction, allowing visitors to feel what is sure to be a very tactile display. Beyond the installation, there will be smaller pieces such as examples of Hicks’s Minimes, small weavings made on a handloom with which she travels, as well as photography and archive of her most celebrated projects including panels from her monumental New York Ford Foundation tapestries, first realised in 1967, and re-created last year.

Restoration Effort for a Broken Wood carving

From: abqjournal

The giraffe that once was intended to tower over the “Wooden Menagerie” exhibit on Santa Fe’s Museum Hill instead has its neck and head in ignoble display outside its entrance.

The 11-foot wooden construction by the Tesuque artist Felipe Archuleta (1910-1991) just has too many nicks and missing chunks to reign in its full majesty at the Museum of International Folk Art.

It needs repair and, with funding and on-staff conservator availability limited, the Museum of New Mexico is launching what’s believed to be its first crowd-funding campaign to get the work done.

“It’s a valuable experience no matter what happens,” said Shelley Thompson, marketing director, who proposed the experiment in fundraising. “Even if we don’t meet the goal, we will learn some things. It will take a series of tests to see if this is a viable fundraising solution.”

The campaign is taking place on Indiegogo, accessible throughInternationalFolkArt.org/brokebackgiraffe, and the goal is $10,000. That will give a good start to the conservation work, which could cost up to $15,000, she said.

While the head and neck are on view at the museum with an appeal for help in restoring it, the remainder of the colorful yellow and brown giraffe stands among a host of other artifacts in a storage room at the museum. At its feet are sealed bags holding small bits that have broken off, along with a chunk of the hump joining the shoulder and neck, where the animal’s mane first sprouts.

Avoid The Queues, Shop Handmade Online!

Let the silly season commence! Christmas can be a really joyful time but it can also be a period of great stress, particularly when you’re out and about, stomping up and down the high street, trying to find the perfect handmade Christmas cards and presents for your friends and family.

This year, why not do all you can to keep the stress at bay by shopping for your gifts online at home on the sofa with a nice mug of mulled wine and some carols on the radio? Much calmer indeed! You can spend as long as you like thinking over your purchases and won’t have to fight anyone over the last teddy bear left on the shop shelves.

Even better, you won’t have to trudge home in the rain and snow with all your heavy shopping bags. Your friendly neighbourhood postman will just pop them through your letter box in a few days’ time.

However, there is one thing you need to make sure of when Christmas shopping on the internet – don’t leave it too late! Always check with the retailer to see when their last days for delivery are and bear this in mind when making your purchases. There’d be nothing worse than turning up on December 25th with nothing to put under the tree just because you forgot that the last day for ordering your presents was the 21st and you missed the deadline.

Why not set some time aside this weekend to do some of your shopping? Stick a lovely festive film on (we’re quite partial to Miracle on 34th Street, ourselves) and see what you can find online.

How Long Do You Spend Christmas Shopping?

When it comes to buying Christmas gifts, men are notorious for the speed at which they can complete the task – but it might come as a bit of a surprise to you just how fast some can actually get it all done.

According to a festive survey from retailer QVC, one in four men say they can get it all done in a single hour, with the majority only setting aside one day to buy all their presents. But that’s not all – three per cent claim that they can actually finish Christmas shopping in under ten minutes.

Women, on the other hand, dedicate a lot more time to the job, with just 12 per cent saying they would be able to finish shopping in an hour. In all, 30 per cent said that it took between three and five hours, and 35 per cent stated that they could get it all done in between one and three hours.

Of course, there are plenty of others out there who start planning for the festive season months in advance and make lists of presents for people of things they think they’d like ages before December arrives. When it comes to looking for handmade pressies, the more time you can spend the better so you can find that perfect gift for someone special.

Why not use the internet to help? You could set up a secret board on Pinterest and pin all the possible presents you find so that you don’t have to remember what website you found them on later. They’ll be right there waiting for you when you’re ready to spend some money.

Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever

If you spend any time at all on the internet, you will have come across Grumpy Cat. Officially known as Tardar Sauce, Grumpy Cat is an online celebrity famed for her rather moody expression who has appeared on the covers of New York magazine and The Wall Street Journal – and now she’s getting her very own TV movie!

Those of you looking for gifts for cat lovers should, as well as stocking up on lots of lovely handmade goodies for your friends and family, think about showing your pals with a feline affinity Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever, about a 12-year-old girl who desperately wants a yuletide companion.

As she wanders into a pet shop, she comes across the similarly lonely Grumpy Cat (voiced by Parks and Recreation’s own Aubrey Plaza) and discovers that they can communicate with one another. However, Grumpy Cat isn’t quite the placid, sweet little mewing friend she was on the lookout for. What happens next? Well, you’ll have to go and see it for yourself.

This isn’t the first time Tardar Sauce has appeared on screen, however. She’s also made appearances on American Idol, Good Morning America, Today, Anderson Live and The Soup. She also attended her own book launch in Los Angeles and appeared in Lil Bub & Friendz, a documentary that was premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013 and went on to win the Tribeca Online Festival Best Feature Film.

Can you think of a better way of marking the festive season than getting all your friends around to see this film and then surprising them on December 25th with some gorgeous cat-related presents as well? We can’t! It’s on Lifetime on November 29th, so make a note in your diaries now.

Hot Craft Trend: Ikat

tapestry placematsEveryone’s heard of tie-dye, or at least they have if they’ve been paying any attention to the arts and crafts world over the last few months (we love that the 70s have been enjoying such a revival!), but chances are that you’ve yet to come across its distant cousin, ikat – a similar method that results in delightfully unique and vibrant designs.

The word ‘ikat’ means to tie or bind and, although originally first used to describe the process of tie-dying in a certain way, it has since begun to be used to refer to the resulting textiles – which, we think we can all agree, are absolutely beautiful. It’s no wonder that this traditional craft is becoming more and more popular as time goes on.

Once the threads have all been dyed and weaved together to make absolutely stunning patterns and prints, they can be turned into anything your crafty heart desires. Traditionally, repeated patterns like cypress trees and ram’s horns were seen on cloth that reflected the long-standing motifs seen in central Asian art, but while these are still admired and are undeniably gorgeous, the craft has been given a seriously contemporary twist in the last couple of years.

One designer making seriously cool moves in the ikat department is Ptolemy Mann, who uses these traditional skills to make modern fabrics, furnishings, bed linen, cushions, rugs and throws. We’re particularly keen on her new range of lampshades produced alongside Copper & Silk, which would be a very funky addition to any living room anywhere.

We caught up with the folk at Copper & Silk to find out more about ikat and what it’s all about. “We love the exotic flair that ikat lends to any interior – instantly energising the space. We love it best in bright pops of colour and contemporary patterns, although the traditional weaving process is fascinating as well,” the team told us.

So what do you think about ikat? We can’t get enough of the contemporary look and feel to it, mixed perfectly with the traditional skills the practice requires. While we don’t have any ikat products on our site at the moment, we’re sure you’ll like our tapestry place mats just as much so have a peek to see what takes your fancy.

Vegan Yarn: All You Need To Know

cat tapestriesKnitters are very often ethically minded people who want to make sure that the products they use, from the yarn down to their knitting needles, are produced with a conscience and aren’t hurting either animals or people in developing countries.

While some sheep do need to be shorn in order to remove any excess wool and help prevent flies from laying eggs in their skin (which then turn into maggots that can cause real damage to an animal), the wool industry can be exploitative and cruel – which is why so many people are turning to vegan yarn.

A recent PETA campaign revealed how badly sheep are treated by those working in the wool industry in the US and Australia, which is sure to turn some people away from one of their favourite hobbies so that they’re not supporting such cruelty, but changing your yarn is a simple way to do so while still allowing yourself to knit.

Panda Sock Yarn, for example, is made of nylon, cotton and bamboo, while banana yarn – made from the outer layers of tree bark – is soft, durable and renewable, and is perfect for making all sorts of garments, be they cardigans or scarves.

Cotton yarn is the most common of all the plant-based yarns so if you don’t want to be contributing to animal abuse, it is a good choice. However, there are environmental issues involved with knitting with it, since cotton crops are in fact some of the most sprayed plants in the world. If you want to be more conscientious with your yarn choices, just do a bit of research and see what a difference you can make.

If you’re a fan of handicrafts, you’ll love the products we have on our website. If needlework is your thing, you’ll really fall for our cat tapestries so why not have a look and see if you can find some Christmas presents for people – or even just for you!

Real Craft Exhibition And The Ideas Behind It.

From: Crafts Council

Designer and curator Chris Eckersley explains the ideas behind his new exhibition Real Craft, which is at New Brewery Arts, Cirencester, from 4 October – 16 November.

It’s a popular myth that old skills are dying out. You only have to look around to see high levels of craft skill still practised in everyday making and manufacturing – but much goes unrecognised, thanks to the bad press machines are sometimes given as an aid to manufacture. This is a mindset which insists anything made in a ‘factory’ – as opposed to a ‘workshop’ – cannot be ‘crafted’. Even a workshop can be suspect; since Bernard Leach told potters they were artists, the craft preference has been for ‘studio’ production. Easily portrayed as inhuman (think of Chaplin’s Modern Times) and the enemy of hand-production, in truth the machine is, as everyone knows, simply a useful tool.

Eventually many of these prejudices can be traced back to William Morris. Before Morris, Henry Cole and the Design Reform movement had been critical of the goods produced by British manufacturers, crusading against what he saw as bad taste; but Cole had no problem with the use of improved manufacturing processes. Morris, however, blamed the machine for the decline in standards, and sought to return production methods to a pre-mechanised age, as described in his utopian 1890 view of a post-mechanised future, News From Nowhere. Although a devout socialist, it is obvious that Morris’s early Nimbyism was quite reactionary. The message: is ‘No factories in England’s green and pleasant land’ – which is easy to say if you’re high up on the Victorian rich list.

Arts & Crafts Helping Refugees

tapestry table matsWe all know about the healing power of arts and crafts, and how good it can be for your health and wellbeing but now certain traditional skills are being used to bring joy to the life of refugees in Syria and those stuck in the middle of the crisis to help them deal with the difficulties they are currently facing.

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent project, based in Dwailaa, teaches women weaving, knitting and other crafty pursuits in a bid to help people support their families and escape the pressures of their daily lives. Not only does the pastime allow them to make friends and meet others in similar situations, but it also gives them the opportunity to make money by selling their baby blankets, mobile phone holders, carpets and scarves.

“We start the sessions as teachers and students but soon we all become friends. Some of the women become so skilled they are able to help the others and pass on their knowledge,” Rasha Al-Tally, one of the project workers, was quoted by the British Red Cross as saying.

In 2011, a study conducted by the University of Glasgow suggested that crafts like quilting are incredibly good for us, allowing people to really find an outlet for their creativity. The bright colours crafters typically work with when making these items are uplifting and, because it is often done in a big group, the practice can really give people’s confidence a boost where social interaction is concerned as well.

As you can see, there are many different reasons for turning to arts and crafts as a hobby, so why not see where your particular skills lie? If you don’t feel quite ready, have a look at our shopping pages and perhaps buy some tapestry table mats to see if you feel inspired.

YCF: What can people expect from your book?

LG: As the title suggests people can most definitely learn to sew from the book, although, it’s perfect for those looking to build on their skills too. There are always several ways to tackle different situations in sewing and I share lots of my own hints and tips that I’ve learned over almost a lifetime of sewing.

The techniques section at the beginning acts as a great reference tool and the 20 inspiring projects included in the book, along with full-size patterns, take you from easy-peasy through to more tricky dressmaking projects.

YCF: Are there projects for all abilities?

LG: The projects are definitely for all abilities as I offer a variation as well as other ways to customize and personalize your project so it’s full of lots of ideas.

YCF: What’s your favourite project in the book?

LG: My favourite project is the Yoke Top. It’s a little more challenging but still a simple classic design and it allows you to experiment with colour-blocking and adding detail like piping or trims.

YCF: What should people make first?

LG: If you have never, ever sewn anything before I’d recommend the simple envelope cushion cover. It will help you practice controlling the fabric though the machine to get an even seam allowance as well as teaching you a folded hem and topstitching. If you have a bit of experience and want to try a garment project, the simple sleeveless top is perfect.

YCF: It’s been quite a long wait between you being on the Sewing Bee and the launch of your book. Why so?

LG: The process of writing the book has been a huge eye-opener into the world of publishing for me. I actually finished writing the book and making up all the projects back in November last year and since then it has been though the long process of copy editing, designing and production. There are so many people and different teams involved, I guess it’s hard to make things go much faster.

YCF: What did you make of this year’s Sewing Bee contestants?

LG: I really admire all the people from this year’s Sewing Bee as the challenges were so… challenging! I liked them all as they were all so different. I really liked Linda, she seemed so lovely and down to earth, and Jenni has such a good eye for seeing the potential in once-loved garments, and turning them into something amazing.

YCF: What’s your favourite thing to sew, clothes-wise?

LG: I wear tops and trouser a lot, and really love to make different tops the most. It’s such an easy way to wear and have a fabric that you love in your life all day.

YCF: Who’s your style icon?

LG: Orla Kiely.

YCF: Who’s your favourite fabric designer?

LG: The whole team and Liberty!

YCF: What else is going on in the fabulous world of Guthrie & Ghani?

LG: We’ve got a huge blogger meet up happening at the beginning of October which I’m really excited about. Over 70 people have signed up to come along to Sew Brum! Christmas is always a lovely time of year too and I love decorating the shop and putting the tree up, and of course, we’ll have our annual Christmas Party too.

And we’ve got a new website in the pipelines as well, which is keeping me busy behind the scenes. The amount of fabric we have is now bulging out the shelves so we’re getting ready for a new shop layout too to accommodate it all!

Spooky Halloween Candle Holders

From Mr Printables

If you want to create that haunted house feel or spooky garden path full of spider webs, bats flying around, ghosts crawling about but don’t actually fancy real spiders, blood thirsty bats or shivery ghosts – these flickering DIY Halloween candle holders will help create that perfect spooky and atmospheric decoration.

These candle wrappers are designed to wrap around a glass, using a t-light candle inside, or around a large diameter white pillar candle, never with any candle with an exposed flame. Of course please take care to keep the candles out of small children’s reach.

T-lights can sometimes crack a thin glass base so you may want to float the t-lights in a little water, great also for extra stability when used outside.

Simply print them on plain papers and wrap around your glasses and candles, they have vellum paper like effect when the candle’s lit and a great spooky flickering light, indoors or out!

Is Jewellery An Art Form?

From: design.artshub.com.au

Jewellery-making has variously been described as adornment, ornamentation or maker’s craft. Traditionally jewellery has typically been considered more for its economic value rather than aesthetic consideration.

Contemporary jewellery, however, has been making great strides from artisan’s market to art gallery space.

It has been exhibited within the gallery context in Europe since the 1970s.

wooden jewellery

There are a number of galleries worldwide dedicated exclusively to exhibiting it, which is highly collected within a niche market of ‘insiders’, according to Bridget Kennedy, of Studio 20/17 in NSW.

And recently galleries have opened outside of Europe that showcase jewellery – sometimes termed variously as small-scale sculpture or wearable art – which speaks to a small but growing audience.

In NSW and the ACT, three exhibitions and a workshop continues to explore the concept of contemporary jewellery as a wearable art form.

Top 5 Craft Hashtags On Social Media

Indonesian wood carvingsIf you’re a designer-maker trying to make a living out of selling your handmade wares, you’ll know just how competitive the market is becoming around the world – sites like Etsy and Folksy have meant that we’re all fighting for the same consumers and getting anyone’s attention is particularly difficult.

Luckily, the internet isn’t just a great place to set up shop and try to sell your products – it’s also a brilliant place to connect with like-minded people who are facing the same daily struggles you are as a small business owner… and they’re easy to find thanks to the wonder that is the hashtag.

If you’re on Twitter in the UK at 19:30 on a Wednesday, for example, then you’re in the perfect place to take part in #handmadehour. On until 21:30 every week, it’s a great opportunity to network and show people what you’re making and what you have to sell.

Or if you’re thinking that now is the perfect time to make the move from the world wide web to your first-ever bricks and mortar shop, check out #emptyshops, which is used to advertise vacant premises in town centres and the high street. Pop-up shops are really popular at the moment, so if you’ve got an original product range that will capture people’s imaginations, why not get involved?

Instagram’s great for designer-makers as well, because your posts are purely visual so it’s the ideal platform for marketing your products – and lets you show people a bit of behind-the-scenes action from your studio or craft room as well. Tagging your work with #instacraft will allow a huge number of people around the world to see it, with over 69,000 posts tagged in this way.

For sewists all over the world, #talknt on Twitter is a great one to follow – particularly if you’re new to the craft and have lots of questions about just where to begin. And then there’s #crafterminds, also on Twitter, which is for crafters across all disciplines who just want to chat, share their projects and promote their products.

Our Top Sewing Tips

scarvesWe know how much you love to buy handmade items whenever the shopping opportunity arises – there’s nothing like supporting homegrown artisan designer-makers in their endeavours and buying something truly one of a kind, and seeing what they can make often proves to be the inspiration we need to start our own crafty projects.

When it comes to sewing, people are often quite daunted by the idea of starting something up, as they think it’s awfully complicated and they wouldn’t know where to begin. But there are a few tools you can buy that will help, and we’re not just talking needles and a pin cushion here (although they’re also useful).

If you’d like to try your hand at a quilt, for example, you should go out and get yourself a rotary cutter straight away as this will save you so much cutting out time. And when it gets a bit blunt, simply fold some tin foil a couple of times and slice away on it with your blunt cutter, which should sharpen it up again.

Always keep a pair of sewing scissors to hand as well and do your best not to use them to cut anything else. They need to be super sharp in order to cut through fabric easily and if you use them to cut something like paper for example they’ll go blunt really quickly.

Don’t forget about seam allowances when making items as well, no matter what they are. This is the distance between your seam line where you stitch your pieces of fabric together and the cut edge of the material. If you don’t include a seam allowance, when you turn the fabric out the right way around, your end piece will be a whole lot smaller than you intended!

For more suggestions to help you get to grips with sewing, have a look at these expert ideas from pattern producer Simplicity. And if you like sewing, check out the handmade scarves we’ve got in stock in our online shop right now.

Pompoms Galore For #Worldpomination!

buy tapestriesYou don’t have to have any particularly crafty skills to join in with the latest trend taking the handmade world by storm – all you need is a ball of wool, a bit of cardboard and some time on your hands and you can take part in #worldpomination, a project set up by Kirstie Allsopp as part of The Handmade Fair to break the Guinness World Record for the longest line of pompoms ever.

All you have to do is make three or more of these fluffy little treasures, tie them together and fix your name on them somewhere, then take them into your nearest Hobbycraft shop or bring them along with you to the fair, which is taking place between September 19th and 21st.

If you’ve never made a pompom before, first of all – why ever not? They’re so much fun to do and are really easy. You can make them any size at all depending on how big your cardboard circles are and you can even make teeny-tiny ones by wrapping a bit of yarn around the tines of a fork. Check out this video tutorial showing you how to do just that if you’re not sure where to start.

We’d love to see what you come up with for #worldpomination, so send us your photos over on Facebook or Twitter. You’ll also be doing your bit to raise money for an excellent cause and can donate £3 to official Handmade Fair charity Sense, which helps support children and adults who are deafblind, as well as making your pompoms. Just text POMPOM to 70111 to donate.

While we may not be stocking many pompoms right now, if you like the cute little pompom hats in the picture, check out our website and maybe buy hats for your friends.

Dan Webb, Wood Carver Extraordinaire

Dan webbWhen it comes to wooden carvings, there aren’t many out there who can do it better than Seattle-based artist Dan Webb, who really knows his way around a lathe and chisel, producing some seriously beautiful and intricate works of art that constantly astound and impress.

Dan – who is fast becoming known as the wood wizard of Seattle – transforms old logs into incredibly lifelike figures, a practice he sort of fell into after working as a carpenter for a few years upon graduating from the Cornish College of the Arts having done a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

His works are entirely captivating (although seeing them in real life is a must for you to get a true understanding of just how good he is at carving). Fortress, for example, is an incredibly detailed piece that depicts two young children hidden beneath a blanket, with just their shoes poking out from beneath, inspired by Dan’s own children.

People do feature in his work but they tend to be quite fragmented, either a pair of shoes, a single arm or just one leg, or even just the suggestion of a person, such as his Sleeper sculpture, which is a pillow carved out of wood with the indentation left behind of the sleeper’s head where it once lay.

16danwebbfortress

One of our favourite pieces of his is I Love You, an incredibly realistic carving of a balloon that just seems to float along, with its ribbon trailing on the floor. If you have the chance to see a Dan Webb exhibition, grab it with both hands – the things this man can do with wood have to be seen to be believed!

If you like Dan’s work, you’ll love our Indonesian wood carvings, so have a quick perusal of our site to see what you can find.

Needles Out For The Innocent Big Knit

yarnThere’s no better reason for delving into your knitting bag than to do your bit for charity (and certainly no better reason to learn to knit in the first place!), so if you want to give a little bit back this year and use your talents for the greater good, get involved with the innocent Big Knit.

The drinks company teams up with Age UK every year (and has done so for the last decade, in fact), to knit up lots of tiny little woolly hats (3,000 in total!) to help raise money for the charity.

Each hat that is made is stuck over the lid of an innocent smoothie bottle and for every one sold, 25p is donated to Age UK, with the cash then going to help older people stay health and warm during the winter and the rest of the year.

What a brilliant campaign! We’ve seen all the little hats on bottles in shops at around this time of year in the past and can’t wait to get involved. (We’re going through our yarn stash right now, as we type!) If you want to join us and use your wonderful knitting skills for a truly worthy cause, you’ve got until November 10th to finish your hats and get them sent in.

You can find patterns at The Big Knit website, or you could also start designing your own patterns for people to use and share them on Twitter or Facebook. For each hat pattern that is shared, 10p will be donated to Age UK.

What knitted products would you like to see in our shop? Let us know here, then take a look at our other soft craft products (like tapestry cushion covers) that we have for sale. You never know what you might find!

Sewing Bee Star Launches New Book

Sewing Concept Background With Floral PincushionDid you watch the last series of The Great British Sewing Bee? Wasn’t it brilliant? We’re certain that it inspired so many of you to go out and buy tapestries, needles, thread and all other bits of sewing paraphernalia to get yourself started with some serious creativity.

If that sounds like a familiar story to you, then you’ll definitely want to get your mitts on Sew Fabulous (coming out on August 28th), the first book from Sewing Bee star Stuart Hillard, which covers all sorts of different projects from bags, cushions and throws to window treatments.

Whatever you want to try your hand at, you’re sure to find it in this worthy tome. “I love to sew for the home, where you can have a lot of impact quickly. And it’s very straightforward, not like clothes,” Stuard said, speaking to the Western Daily Press.

He’s not the only Sewing Bee contender to have done well following the show either, with the brilliant Tilly Walnes – who put up a worthy fight in the first series – bringing out her first book this year as well.

Love at First Stitch is proving to be one of the most popular craft books of the year so far and if you’re interested in making your own clothes, it’s definitely the purchase for you. Tilly’s definitely got a bit of a 50s kind of style about her so a lot of the patterns are along those lines, but there’s something for everyone inside so make sure you bag a copy as soon as you can.

The wonderful world of art dolls

cute fashionMany out there think that dolls are just for little girls still tied to their mother’s apron strings, but this is most definitely not the case any more and there are now hundreds of artists around the world crafting one-of-a-kind art dolls that can actually sell for thousands of pounds.

They’re highly collectible (and have even caught the attention of design greats like Louis Vuitton!), so if you’d like to buy handmade products and give someone a very special present (and you have a lot of money burning a hole in your back pocket) think about investing in an art doll.

Check out the ones by Tran Thu Hang to see something really special. This Vietnamese artist makes hers out of wood, perfectly crafted little figures with amazing facial expressions and lots of character, although she hasn’t always used this material in her art.

When she first started – as just a little girl – she made them out of candles, balloons, clay, whatever she could get her hands on really, and her career took off from there. Inspired by children, each of her dolls tells a different story and are all carved from just one piece of wood.

Everything is done by hand, which means that while the features might not be as intricate as the art dolls seen in Japan, for example, they are completely original… so you know you’ll be the only one who owns that particular doll.

To find out more about these funny little creatures and others of their ilk, get your hands on a copy of Art Doll Quarterly, a magazine dedicated entirely to sculptural figures made from wire, clay and cloth.

Lucy Sparrow's Felt Corner Shop

Felting activityThe arts and crafts community is a very inspired one and we’re constantly marvelling at the things you all get up to time and time again, but we’ve been particularly wowed by artist Lucy Sparrow, who this month decided to set up her own corner shop, with everything made from felt!

Those of you out there with a keen interest in buying crafty pressies for people should think about hotfooting it off to east London so you can check out the shop (although you’ll have to be quick about it as it’s only open for a few more days, shutting up on August 31st).

What a brilliant idea, although we’re sure it must have taken Lucy an absolute age to stitch together the 4,000 items that are currently on display. If you do make it to the store in time, you’ll find that everything is for sale, although don’t expect typical corner shop prices. A pint of milk will set you back the princely sum of £20!

Lucy’s art installation hasn’t just been about showing off her sewing skills and bringing craft and fine art together. There have also been community workshops put on to help people build up their social skills and also encourage them to think more about the demise of the once booming corner shop industry.

We can’t think of a better way of bringing local communities together than getting them all sat down working on something arts and crafty, can you? We’re very much looking forward to seeing what Lucy does next. We might not have felt products like hers in stock right now, but you’re sure to get a kick out of our tapestry cushion covers, so have a little look before you go.

King Of The Knitted Swingers!

There’s quite a lot of monkey business going on at the moment, with Richmond-based knitting group The Knitwits offering their skills and time to help raise money for local charity the Vineyard Community Centre by knitting lots of monkeys and other jungle creatures, and depositing them around Hill Rise.

Their chosen charity does valuable work in the local area, looking after people in crisis as well as managing the Richmond foodbank, so it’s a very worthy cause and one that certainly deserves as much support as it can get.

tapestry cushion covers

Guerrilla knitting – the typically anonymous act of placing handmade pieces in public spaces (also known as yarn bombing or yarn storming) – is growing in popularity, with all sorts of knitwear popping up in towns all over the UK, and indeed the world… so keep your eyes peeled as you make your way through life!

Pioneered by the amazing Magda Sayeg (who’s yarn bombed stairs, buses and statues in her time), this form of street art is capturing people’s imaginations everywhere and it’s not hard to see why. Because wool is biodegradable it’s great for people who want to take ownership of public spaces without getting in trouble or causing any damage, so watch out for yarn bombs on your way about town. Popular places include branches of trees and fences, although if you want to do it yourself check the wool content of your yarn as some types can actually damage the trees.

For further yarn bombing inspiration, check out the likes of Deadly Knitshade and Knit the City, who all very firmly believe in enhancing public spaces by adorning them with wool.

We may not have any guerrilla knitting artifacts in stock right now but you could have a look at some of our lovely tapestry cushion covers instead.

Extreme Quilting With Ben Venom

buy tapestriesWhen you think quilts, your mind probably turns to little old ladies in their craft rooms at home, stitching pink, yellow and blue squares together in front of the fire. What you probably don’t think of immediately is a hot-blooded American male sewing up old heavy metal T-shirts to make gigantic bedspreads.

But that’s exactly what Ben Venom does for a living, exhibiting his extreme quilts (which are absolutely massive, typically rather too large for a double bed) around the world. He’s been everywhere, from Denmark and Ireland to Germany and all over the US, and will definitely inspire you to get quilting this year!

The imagery of his quilts is a little dark so not for the faint of heart (think the occult, vintage tattoos and motorcycle gang motifs), but they’re put together in such a beautiful way that they have serious mass appeal. Ben Venom’s work may be more suited to hanging in a gallery rather than covering your bed at home, but his quilts could be just the inspiration you’re looking for to invest in something similar yourself… or even get the sewing machine out to have a go at quilting as well!

As crafts go, quilting probably isn’t the easiest one to try and pick up if you’ve never made anything yourself, so buying one for your bed is likely to be the better option if you can’t go another day without having a brand new bedspread. Just have a little look around to see if there are any designers whose style you particularly like – you’ll definitely be able to find a quilt that suits your bedroom décor.

Do you want to see heavy metal quilts in our online store? If yes, please let us know. Until then, have a little look at the similar items we have got and maybe buy tapestries for your home.

Show Your Support For Arts And Crafts!

Wooden CarvingsThere’s a real resurgence in the UK and beyond for the arts and crafts movement at the moment, with people keen to invest in beautifully made pieces for their home or as presents for friends and family that are one of a kind and more special than the mass-produced pieces you can buy on the high street.

After all, you don’t want to fill your home with products that countless people around the country have in their living rooms, do you? When you buy wooden carvings or similar pieces, you know that not only are you doing your best to support independent designer-makers but you’re also purchasing something truly unique that other people are unlikely to already own… so your home or that of your friends will remain completely original!

These carvings make a great addition to any home and are made by the most highly skilled artisanal crafters out there, so you know you’re buying a quality product that will stand the test of time – unlike a lot of the pieces you can buy on the high street that might be cheaper but will break as soon as you get them home.

Whether you’re on the lookout for something decorative or a piece that has a more practical application, you are sure to find it made out of wood. You could opt for a lovely wooden calendar that can be used time and time again or a beautiful bamboo bird house, for example. Or you might be more taken with an abstract figure to put on the mantelpiece. Whatever you’re searching for, carvings look beautiful in any part of the home.

How To Clean Your Crystal Figurines

When you buy rock crystal figurines either for yourself or for a friend or member of your family, it’s important that you do some research into how best to keep them clean so they can always stay beautiful and sparkly on your shelf for years to come. If you have a huge collection of these little figures, you need to make sure you’ve set out enough time for the cleaning process.

Buy Rock Crystal FigurinesYou don’t want to start such a project, get halfway through and then run out of time – only half your collection will look good as new and will show up the rest of them, which will look dirtier by comparison. You should also try not to rush as these products can be fragile and you don’t want to break them. You might also want to wear a pair of cotton gloves to avoid getting sticky fingerprints on your figurines.

Make sure that you use a good-quality window cleaner that isn’t abrasive or a cleaning solvent when polishing up your figurines as you don’t want to damage them. Use different soft cloths for cleansing, polishing and drying so you know that you’ll end up with a piece that looks as good as new once you’ve finished. You also need to make sure that you give your cabinet or shelf a good clean as well, so take all your figurines out of the cupboard and then give it a thorough wipe down. This will mean that your figures stay clean for much longer.

Cross Stitch: Perfect For Nursery Décor

Buy Embroidery PicturesThere’s nothing quite so exciting as preparing for a new arrival and nesting is a really important part of the process. Decorating a nursery can be lots of fun and if you’re about to start such a project to get ready for the pitter-patter of little feet, then you could buy embroidery pictures as the perfect addition to the room.

Cross stitch is a huge favourite among arts and crafts enthusiasts at the moment and you’ll find that these gorgeous little pictures made using this particular technique come in a variety of styles and depict a great number of scenes, perfect for either a little girl or a little boy.

You’ll find that you’re particularly spoiled for choice in fact, so might find it pretty difficult to choose just one picture for your lovely nursery. What’s more, they come in a range of prices so you’ll be able to find a frame that’s perfectly suited to your budget, whatever that may be.

It can be pricy kitting out a new nursery but the décor of the room is actually quite important. You want to make sure that you create a very peaceful space and pictures can really help you do just that, so make sure you choose the design of your piece very carefully indeed.

If you’re not a fan of cross stitch, don’t worry. There’s also a new trend coming to the fore where artists are using ribbon to embroider pictures, which looks lovely and would be a really different addition to any nursery.

Why Buy Framed Amber Pictures

Present shopping can be a rather tricky affair and you can spend hours upon hours searching various shops on the high street and online, and still never find that perfect gift for friends and family. However, if you buy framed amber pictures you know that you’ll be investing in a unique piece that will bring people joy for years to come, so why not have a look to see what you can find when it comes to these beautiful creations.

It is highly unlikely that you will find something so beautiful to hang in your home or to give to a friend for their living room wall. Everyone’s heard of amber jewellery, but paintings made using the fossil resin are less well known so if you’re looking for a really special gift that will wow your recipient, you need look no further.

Do you have a friend who’s really into art and loves having special pictures to hang in their home? Then this would be the perfect present for them and will really help cement your friendship and make sure you’re pals for years to come. Even better, amber is often thought to symbolise good luck and is also said to have healing properties, which makes these paintings an even better gift.

All You Need to Know about Chrysoprase Gemstones

If you’re thinking you’d like to buy gemstone jewellery – either for yourself or as a really meaningful present for that special someone in your life – then you could certainly do a lot worse than by investing in a beautiful piece made using chrysoprase, a gorgeous stone that is well known for its healing properties.

This particular gem is thought to be excellent for promoting joy and happiness, as well as attracting prosperity, abundance and love, so any jewellery using chrysoprase would be a great choice to give as a gift. Of course, if you’re feeling as though you yourself are in need of a little pick me up, it would be a brilliant way to go as well.

Aside from its special meaning, the colour of the stone is also a gorgeous one and will go with almost any skin tone so you won’t need to worry that your chosen recipient won’t look good when they step out in earrings or necklaces made using chryosprase.

And there’s no chance that they won’t like the present either, so you’re definitely in the safest of hands when buying jewellery made using this particular gemstone. If someone you know is really into meditation, this would be a good choice for them as well since it is thought it can help people to achieve deep meditative states. Happy Mother’s Day!

As we approach the end of March, it’s common for sons and daughters all around the world to be caught en route to the store to pick up late Mother’s Day gifts. While most mothers are kind enough to let us off the hook for such poor planning and selfish behaviour, others are not quite so forgiving!

If you are looking to impress your mother and let her know that you haven’t forgotten about ‘her’ day, then why not go for something a little bit different? Every year, we buy the same things over and over – perfume, flowers, chocolates – but the selection out there is so grand and marvellous you really don’t need to settle for such a generic choice.

Why not go for something a little bit more unique, a little bit more long-term? Crafted jewellery and ornaments could be the best way to go. Mother’s Day is a difficult one to get right in terms of presents – you don’t want to go overboard, but you don’t want to understate how much your mother means to you.

As the kind soul who brought you up and fed you for many years, your mother deserves a little bit of something back from you, right? So why not go that extra mile to provide that and go for something she will have for years and years to come?

Jewellery which has been hand crafted is always a well appreciated gift, purely for the unique nature and style of it – it’s very rarely like anything else they will own.

This unique level of creativity will not only get you in the good books for originality, but your mother will genuinely appreciate being given something which she has not had for the last six years in a row from you! Don’t let your mind wander when you are out buying presents, as this is how poor presents are bought for people. A little bit of looking around online and finding the right type of gift for your mother, something that matches her own style, couldn’t be any simpler.

There are so many places that you can start online to find the right type of product for your mother, presents from the gas station are no longer an acceptable thing! So give you mother a nice big smile on Sunday when she receives something which isn’t the same as every other year – give her quality, hand-crafted jewellery she can wear and savour for many years to come.

A bit of history

A little bit of thread, a little bit of cloth. For as long as these two items have existed, there has been embroidery. The Japanese, the English, native Americans, just to name a few, are civilizations who have long used embroidery to decorate their homes, clothing, furniture, and ceremonial items. Unfortunately, due to light and insects, the earliest of these fabulous creations have long ago decayed. One may find some embroidery made after 1600 A.D. that has been preserved by churches or a museum.

Collectors of embroidery categorize the early works into two groups. Let’s look at those two groups a little closer.

Stump work

These are very brightly colored designs made to depict different areas of life as it existed in the mid-seventeenth century. It was usually done on white silk, and was sometimes used along with a wooden head, hands and feet to create a three dimensional look. Other times, stump work would adorn a trinket box used to serve tea or hold jewellery, or perhaps the embroidery would be used to decorate a mirror. Embroidery collectors can still find stump work, and it is a treasure to behold.

Samplers

From long ago until the recent past, embroidery was taught to girls in schools as part of their curriculum. Samplers typically are stitched on wool or silk, and brightly colored silk thread was used. Children began showing their knowledge of the alphabet or numbers by stitching them into a sampler. As their experience grew, they stitched scenes such as their schoolhouse, or perhaps scenes of children playing.

While embroidery is not a hard process, it requires much patience. Countless hours are spent to create these amazing works of art. People around the world who collect embroidery understand the time invested in even the simplest designs.

Balinese Wood Carving and Other Handicrafts

Bali is the land of artisans. There probably is no other place on earth who’s primary industry is handicrafts. Through the love of their fertile grounds and their devotion to their gods comes some of the best handmade items available. Just a few of these items are carvings – stone and wood, basket weavers, jewellery makers, and ceramic and terracotta crafters. Different villages are known for their unique handcrafted arts. If traveling to Bali is not on your agenda, below are a few of the items available for export. But for now, take a trip with me through Bali, and we will discover the treasures these talented natives have to offer.

Wood carving

Almost one hundred years ago, the people of Bali began a new type of wood carving that caters to tourists. This began in two areas, Mas and Sebatu, and those locations are still premier wood carving sites. Galleries are abundant in these areas for the sale of wooden products at prices anyone can afford. Some of the more popular wood carvings include wooden flowers, masks, boxes and nameplates, wind chimes, and many more items. We have a wide variety of Balinese wood carvings on this site. Stone carving

There is a village near Batubulan, Bali that is the mecca of Balinese stone carving. While the carvings may, at first glance, look like cast cement, they are actually hand carved out of soft, porous rock made from volcanic ash. One might find carvings of animals, sculptures and surprisingly, modern art.

Silver and Gold

Travel to another part of Bali to the village of Celuk to find gallery upon gallery of silver and goldsmiths. Whether you are looking for traditional Balinese silver ware or modern, contemporary designs, the artisans in Celuk use a process which involves attaching gold to the surface of silver to make gorgeous pieces.
